The Evolution of the Hycan V09: Hycan’s Ambitious Electric Luxury Minivan

The Hycan V09 stands as one of the most ambitious vehicles produced by the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Hycan. Designed as a premium all-electric minivan, the V09 combined futuristic styling, advanced battery technology, luxury-oriented seating, and high-speed charging capabilities in a segment increasingly dominated by upscale electric multipurpose vehicles. Although Hycan itself faced major financial and organizational challenges, the V09 demonstrated the company’s desire to compete with established premium electric MPVs from brands such as Denza, Zeekr, and Voyah.

Introduced during the rapid growth of China’s electric vehicle industry, the V09 represented a major shift for Hycan, moving the company beyond compact crossovers and into the luxury family transportation market.

Origins of the Hycan V09

The Hycan brand originated from a joint venture between GAC Group and NIO. Originally known as GAC-NIO, the company was established in 2018 before being rebranded as Hycan in 2021. The automaker focused on electric vehicles emphasizing connectivity, intelligent driving systems, and youthful design.

Before the V09, Hycan’s lineup mainly consisted of crossover SUVs and sedans, including the Hycan 007, Z03, and A06. However, Chinese consumer demand for large premium electric minivans grew rapidly during the early 2020s, encouraging Hycan to expand into the luxury MPV market.

The first indication of the V09 appeared during the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show, where Hycan revealed the futuristic Concept-M prototype. The concept previewed a high-end electric people mover with a dramatic design language and advanced technology features.

Development and Official Introduction

The production version of the Hycan V09 was officially unveiled at the end of 2022 and entered the Chinese market in October 2023. The vehicle became Hycan’s first large luxury minivan and one of its most technologically advanced products.

The V09 rode on Hycan’s dedicated H-GEA electric platform, which was engineered using high-strength steel and designed specifically for larger electric vehicles. The platform supported an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging capability.

From the beginning, the V09 was marketed as a premium seven-passenger electric MPV with strong emphasis on passenger comfort, intelligent driving assistance, and executive-style luxury.

Production Years

The Hycan V09 was produced from:

  • 2023 through 2025

Although the vehicle remained relatively new, production was impacted by Hycan’s worsening financial difficulties and declining sales volume during 2024 and 2025.

Exterior Design Evolution

The V09 featured Hycan’s “Shining Star” design language, giving the minivan an unusually futuristic appearance compared to traditional MPVs. Sharp body creases, narrow LED lighting elements, and a large sculpted front fascia helped distinguish the vehicle from more conservative competitors.

The exterior dimensions remained consistent throughout production:

  • Length: 205.3 inches
  • Width: 77.4 inches
  • Height: 75.2 inches
  • Wheelbase: 124.8 inches

Power sliding rear doors, a high roofline, and a large greenhouse enhanced passenger access and interior spaciousness. Unlike many conventional minivans, the V09 adopted a sleek, modern silhouette intended to appeal to luxury-oriented buyers.

Throughout its production run, Hycan made only minor styling adjustments, mostly involving:

  • wheel designs,
  • exterior paint colors,
  • trim-specific detailing,
  • and technology packages.

The vehicle never received a major redesign before production effectively ended.

Powertrain and Battery Technology

Every version of the V09 used a single front-mounted electric motor producing approximately 271 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. The drivetrain sent power to the front wheels through a single-speed transmission.

One of the V09’s most important technological features was its 800-volt electrical system. At launch, this was considered highly advanced for a minivan and allowed extremely rapid DC fast charging speeds.

Hycan claimed certain versions could gain substantial driving range after only a few minutes of charging under ideal conditions. Peak charging capability reportedly reached up to 380 kW.

Battery Options

Throughout production, the V09 was offered with three primary battery configurations:

  • 92 kWh NMC battery
  • 95.2 kWh LFP battery
  • 114.2 kWh NMC battery

Driving range varied depending on battery size and trim level:

  • 620 km CLTC (approximately 385 miles)
  • 762 km CLTC (approximately 473 miles)

These figures were based on the Chinese CLTC testing standard, which generally produces more optimistic estimates than American EPA testing.

Trim Levels and Models

The Hycan V09 lineup was relatively straightforward but included multiple luxury-oriented trim levels.

2023 Launch Trim Levels

At launch, the V09 was offered in the following trims:

  • Deluxe 620
  • Premium 620
  • Premium EREV 620
  • Premium 762
  • Flagship 762

The naming structure reflected battery range and equipment level.

Deluxe 620

The Deluxe 620 served as the entry-level model. Standard features included:

  • 14.6-inch infotainment display
  • digital instrument cluster
  • sliding rear doors
  • seven-passenger seating
  • voice recognition

This trim used the 95.2-kWh battery and provided approximately 620 km of CLTC range.

Premium 620

The Premium 620 added more luxury-oriented equipment, including:

  • upgraded driver assistance systems
  • additional cameras and radar sensors
  • leather seating surfaces
  • heated front seats
  • rear passenger entertainment functions

This version also used the 620-km battery setup.

Premium EREV 620

Although the “EREV” designation suggested extended-range electric capability, the model remained a battery-electric vehicle. This trim mainly differed in battery supplier and charging characteristics. It used a 92-kWh battery produced by Greater Bay Technology.

Premium 762

The Premium 762 introduced the larger 114.2-kWh battery pack, significantly increasing driving range to 762 km CLTC. It also added additional luxury and technology equipment.

Flagship 762

The Flagship 762 represented the top-tier V09 model. This trim included:

Rear passengers also had access to a roof-mounted 17.3-inch folding entertainment display.

Higher trims included:

  • heated and ventilated seats,
  • eight-point massage functionality,
  • zero-gravity reclining second-row seating,
  • a built-in refrigerator compartment,
  • and extensive ambient lighting.

The V09 also included Hycan’s H-VIP driver assistance suite, using:

  • LiDAR,
  • radar sensors,
  • ultrasonic sensors,
  • and multiple cameras.

The system supported adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, lane-keeping assistance, and semi-autonomous driving functions.

Market Performance

Although the V09 attracted attention for its technology and luxury features, sales remained modest compared to larger competitors.

Reported Chinese sales figures included:

  • 971 units in 2023
  • 845 units in 2024
  • 356 units in 2025

These declining sales reflected both intense competition and Hycan’s growing financial instability.

The Chinese premium electric MPV market became increasingly crowded with strong rivals offering better brand recognition and dealer support.

Corporate Difficulties and Future Outlook

By 2024, Hycan faced severe operational and financial problems. Reports suggested the company had sharply reduced operations, experienced layoffs, and struggled with mounting debts. In 2025, GAC reportedly assumed responsibility for parts of Hycan’s after-sales service network, signaling the effective collapse of the brand.

As a result, the future of the V09 remains uncertain. No second-generation model has been officially announced, and the vehicle’s production status appears effectively concluded.

Despite its short lifespan, the Hycan V09 remains significant as an example of China’s rapid EV innovation during the early 2020s. The vehicle demonstrated how quickly Chinese manufacturers could develop technologically advanced luxury electric vehicles featuring:

  • ultra-fast charging systems,
  • highly digital interiors,
  • sophisticated driver assistance,
  • and long-range battery capability.

Although Hycan itself may no longer survive as an independent automaker, many of the technologies and design ideas introduced in the V09 continue influencing newer electric MPVs emerging from Chinese manufacturers today.
