The History of Lingxi
Dongfeng Honda’s Electric Vehicle Brand for a New Generation
Lingxi is a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) marque introduced in 2023 by Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., the long-running joint venture between Japan’s Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and China’s Dongfeng Motor Corporation. Created exclusively for the Chinese market, Lingxi represents Honda’s effort to strengthen its position in the world’s largest EV market by offering affordable battery-electric vehicles designed specifically for younger Chinese consumers.
Unlike traditional automobile manufacturers with decades of independent corporate history, Lingxi is not a standalone automaker. It is a sub-brand operating under Dongfeng Honda, utilizing the engineering, manufacturing, and distribution resources of the joint venture. Because of its recent introduction, Lingxi has a relatively short history and a limited model lineup. However, its creation reflects one of the most significant strategic shifts in Honda’s history as the company adapts to China’s rapid transition toward electrified transportation.
Years of Business Operation
Years of operation: 2023โPresent
Lingxi was officially introduced on September 21, 2023, when Dongfeng Honda unveiled the new brand and revealed the Lingxi L concept sedan in Wuhan, China. The first production vehicle, the Lingxi L, entered production and went on sale in September 2024.
The brand remains in operation today as one of Dongfeng Honda’s dedicated new-energy vehicle (NEV) marques.
The Parent Company Behind Lingxi
Because Lingxi is a brand rather than an independent corporation, it does not have individual founders in the traditional sense.
Instead, Lingxi was created by Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., itself a joint venture between:
Dongfeng Honda began operations in 2003 and has produced numerous Honda passenger vehicles for the Chinese market. By the early 2020s, Honda faced increasing competition in China as domestic EV manufacturers rapidly gained market share. Lingxi was developed as one response to these changing market conditions.
The People Behind the Parent Companies
Although Lingxi itself has no individual founder, the histories of its parent companies begin with two notable figures.
Soichiro Honda
Honda Motor was founded by Soichiro Honda, one of the most influential engineers and entrepreneurs in automotive history.
Born in 1906 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Honda developed an interest in machinery while working in his father’s bicycle repair shop. After becoming an automotive mechanic, he founded Tokai Seiki, a piston ring manufacturer, before establishing Honda Motor in 1948 with business partner Takeo Fujisawa.
Honda believed strongly in engineering innovation, competition, and continuous improvement. Under his leadership, Honda became a global leader in motorcycles and automobiles.
Dongfeng Motor Corporation
Dongfeng Motor Corporation was established in 1969 by the Chinese government as one of China’s major state-owned automobile manufacturers.
Unlike Honda, Dongfeng was not founded by a single entrepreneur. Instead, it was created as part of China’s industrial development strategy and eventually became one of the country’s largest automotive groups.
Why Lingxi Was Created
The early 2020s marked a dramatic transformation in China’s automobile industry.
Domestic companies such as BYD, NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, and numerous startups rapidly expanded their EV offerings, while traditional foreign joint ventures struggled to maintain market share.
Honda’s existing electric models under the e:NS series received only moderate commercial success.
Rather than relying solely on Honda-branded EVs, Dongfeng Honda introduced Lingxi to:
- appeal to Generation Z buyers,
- create a separate design identity,
- compete at lower price points,
- develop vehicles specifically for Chinese customers,
- accelerate EV development using a dedicated platform.
Company executives described Lingxi as a brand intended to provide “ultimate individuality,” “pure enjoyment,” and “reliable protection” for younger drivers. The development program was led by a comparatively young research and development team.
Brand Identity
Unlike Honda’s traditional conservative styling, Lingxi adopted a much more futuristic appearance.
Its logo features an abstract bird motif symbolizing freedom and innovation, while the signature “Lingxi Green” brand color was selected to blend elements of traditional Chinese culture with contemporary design.
The company also introduced new showroom concepts and updated dealership branding to emphasize a youthful, technology-focused image.
Manufacturing Operations
Lingxi vehicles are manufactured by Dongfeng Honda in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.
Production utilizes Honda’s modern manufacturing methods combined with advanced automation.
Typical factory operations include:
- steel body stamping,
- robotic welding,
- corrosion protection,
- paint application,
- battery installation,
- electric drivetrain assembly,
- software programming,
- vehicle inspection,
- road testing.
In 2024, Dongfeng Honda opened its first dedicated EV manufacturing plant in Wuhan. The facility was built specifically to support electric vehicle production, including the Lingxi L, and features a high level of automation with an annual production capacity of about 120,000 vehicles.
What Makes Lingxi Different
Lingxi differs from many automobile manufacturers because it is designed exclusively for one national market.
Instead of producing global vehicles, Lingxi focuses solely on Chinese consumers.
Several characteristics distinguish the brand:
- China-exclusive products,
- battery-electric vehicles only,
- youthful styling,
- dedicated EV platform,
- technology-centered interiors,
- competitive pricing,
- independent branding separate from Honda’s global lineup.
The Lingxi L also introduced a distinctive dashboard featuring five digital displays, giving the cabin a futuristic appearance uncommon among traditional Honda vehicles.
Vehicle Models
Although the lineup remains limited, Lingxi has introduced the following vehicles:
Lingxi L Concept (2023)
The concept car that debuted with the launch of the brand.
Lingxi L (2024โPresent)
The first production vehicle.
Specifications include:
- battery-electric powertrain,
- front-wheel drive,
- approximately 215 horsepower,
- 59.2-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery,
- estimated CLTC range of about 323 miles,
- mid-size four-door sedan configuration.
At present, the Lingxi L remains the brand’s only production model.
Most Successful Vehicle
The Lingxi L is, by default, the brand’s most successful and significant automobile.
It established Lingxi’s market identity by combining:
- affordable pricing,
- modern technology,
- distinctive styling,
- practical driving range,
- Honda engineering,
- Chinese-focused product development.
Although sales have been modest, the model represents Honda’s first vehicle under the Lingxi name and serves as the foundation for future expansion.
Sales Figures
Lingxi vehicles are not officially sold in the United States.
U.S. sales: 0
The Lingxi L recorded 413 retail sales in China during 2024, according to publicly reported Chinese sales data.
No official global sales figures have been released because the brand operates exclusively within China.
U.S. Consumer Reception
Since Lingxi has never been marketed in the United States, there is effectively no measurable U.S. consumer reception.
American automotive journalists have covered the brand primarily as an example of Honda’s evolving China strategy, but there are:
- no U.S. dealership sales,
- no owner satisfaction studies,
- no reliability rankings,
- no U.S. crash-test results,
- and no meaningful American sales statistics.
Marketing Strategy
Lingxi’s marketing differs noticeably from Honda’s traditional advertising.
Instead of emphasizing reliability and practicality, promotional campaigns focus on:
- individuality,
- digital lifestyles,
- intelligent technology,
- youthful design,
- personalization,
- affordability.
The company also emphasized that Lingxi was developed largely by younger engineers, reinforcing its appeal to first-time EV buyers.

Hardships and Challenges
Entering an Extremely Competitive Market
Lingxi entered one of the world’s most competitive automotive markets.
Chinese manufacturers had already established strong positions in affordable EVs, making it difficult for a new entrant to gain attention.
Declining Joint Venture Sales
Foreign joint ventures in China have generally experienced declining market share as consumers increasingly purchase vehicles from domestic brands.
Lingxi was introduced specifically to address this challenge by offering products designed around Chinese preferences rather than adapting global Honda vehicles.
Limited Initial Sales
The Lingxi L achieved relatively modest sales during its first year.
Rather than abandoning the project, Dongfeng Honda continued investing in dedicated EV manufacturing facilities and expanding its electrification strategy, signaling a long-term commitment despite the slow start.
Mergers and Ownership Changes
Lingxi has never merged with another automobile manufacturer.
Lingxi has never been bought out by another company.
Ownership has remained with Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., the joint venture between Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Dongfeng Motor Corporation.
Racing Programs
As of today, Lingxi has no factory-backed motorsports program.
The brand has not competed in:
- Formula racing,
- endurance racing,
- touring cars,
- rally,
- GT competition,
- electric racing championships.
Instead, Lingxi concentrates its resources on consumer EV development.
Accomplishments
Although still a young brand, Lingxi has achieved several notable accomplishments:
- establishment of Honda’s second dedicated EV marque in China,
- launch of a unique EV platform,
- introduction of a China-exclusive product line,
- opening of a dedicated EV production facility,
- development by a predominantly young engineering team,
- expansion of Honda’s electrification strategy in the Chinese market.
Current Status
Current status 2026: Operating
Lingxi remains an active EV brand under Dongfeng Honda.
Its vehicles continue to be manufactured in Wuhan for the Chinese domestic market.
The company remains focused exclusively on battery-electric passenger cars designed specifically for Chinese buyers.
Future Outlook
Lingxi’s future will depend largely on its ability to compete against rapidly evolving Chinese EV manufacturers that continue to introduce new technologies and lower-priced models.
The brand benefits from several strengths:
- Honda engineering expertise,
- Dongfeng’s manufacturing infrastructure,
- dedicated EV production facilities,
- strong nationwide dealer support,
- focus on younger consumers,
- China-specific product development.
However, it also faces substantial competition from established domestic brands with larger EV portfolios and stronger market momentum.
Although Lingxi’s history is still in its earliest stages, the marque represents an important chapter in Honda’s transformation within China. Rather than relying solely on its long-established global reputation, Honda has chosen to create an entirely new brand tailored to local consumer preferences, illustrating how dramatically the world’s largest EV market has reshaped the strategies of even the most established international automobile manufacturers.
