JAC Refine S7: The Evolution of JAC Motors’ Flagship Three-Row SUV
The JAC Refine S7 was the flagship sport utility vehicle produced by JAC Motors during the late 2010s. Developed to compete in China’s rapidly expanding mid-size SUV segment, the Refine S7 combined modern styling, available three-row seating, turbocharged powertrains, and a long list of comfort and technology features. In Mexico, it was marketed as the JAC Sei 7, while in several Latin American countries it was sold as the JAC T80. Although its production run lasted only a few years, the Refine S7 played an important role in JAC’s development as a modern SUV manufacturer and helped pave the way for its successor, the Sehol X7.
Origins and Development
The development of the Refine S7 began during a period when Chinese consumers were increasingly abandoning traditional sedans in favor of crossovers and SUVs. JAC Motors had already experienced success with the smaller Refine S5 and recognized the need for a larger, more premium model that could compete with vehicles from Geely, Changan, Haval, and Chery.
Originally scheduled to debut in 2015, the project experienced delays before finally appearing publicly at the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show. Sales began in China during 2017. The Refine S7 became the largest SUV in the Refine lineup and was marketed as a family-oriented vehicle offering both five-seat and seven-seat configurations.

Launch Model: 2017 Refine S7
The Refine S7 entered production in April 2017 as a front-wheel-drive mid-size crossover SUV.
Built on JAC’s SS platform, the vehicle featured:

- Available five-seat or seven-seat configuration
- MacPherson front suspension
- Multi-link rear suspension

2017–2018 Trim Levels
The early Refine S7 lineup featured a broad range of trim levels designed to appeal to buyers with different budgets and equipment requirements.

Beginning in mid-2019, some markets received new Safety trim variants, including:

The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine was eventually discontinued due to efficiency concerns and changing emissions requirements. As a result, the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine became the primary powertrain for most versions of the S7.

JAC Sei 7 (Mexico)
The model was assembled from CKD kits in Mexico and marketed as the JAC Sei 7. Local production helped JAC establish a foothold in the Mexican market.
JAC T80 (Latin America)
In several Latin American countries, the vehicle was sold as the JAC T80. The name change aligned the vehicle with local marketing strategies while retaining the same fundamental design and engineering.
End of Production
Despite its ambitious positioning, sales of the Refine S7 gradually declined after its initial launch period.
Chinese consumers increasingly favored newer SUVs with more advanced technology, sleeker styling, and electrified powertrains. Sales dropped significantly between 2017 and 2019, prompting JAC to begin development of a replacement.
Production officially ended in 2020.
The model was succeeded by the Sehol X7, which featured a more modern design language and improved technology.
Legacy and Future Outlook
Although the Refine S7 remained in production for only four years, it represented an important milestone for JAC Motors. It demonstrated the company’s ability to develop a competitive three-row SUV with premium features, strong practicality, and international export potential.
The lessons learned from the Refine S7 influenced subsequent JAC and Sehol crossover models, particularly in areas such as interior technology, connectivity, safety systems, and family-oriented packaging.
