The Evolution of the Chery Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus

The Chery Automobile Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus represent one of the newest chapters in the company’s expanding electric vehicle strategy. Introduced as part of Chery’s revived Fulwin lineup, the X3 family combines compact SUV practicality with rugged styling and battery-electric technology aimed at younger buyers and urban drivers. Although the vehicles are still relatively new to the market, the Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus already illustrate how quickly Chinese automakers have evolved in the global EV segment.

The Fulwin name itself has a long history within Chery. The original Fulwin sedans appeared in the late 1990s and early 2000s, helping establish Chery as a major domestic Chinese automaker. In 2023, Chery revived the Fulwin brand as a dedicated electrified sub-brand focused on plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Origins of the Fulwin X3 Program

The Fulwin X3 series traces its roots to the iCar 03, an electric SUV developed by Chery’s iCar division. The iCar 03 debuted as a compact electric off-road-inspired crossover with a boxy shape, modern digital technology, and competitive battery range figures. Chery later rebadged and adapted the vehicle into the Fulwin family, creating the Fulwin X3 and the larger X3 Plus. Automotive media widely described the X3 lineup as a rebadged or revised version of the iCar 03 platform.

The Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus officially entered the Chinese market in August 2025. The launch formed part of Chery’s broader effort to expand its electric SUV portfolio across several sub-brands.

Fulwin X3: Years Produced

2025–Present: First Generation

The first-generation Fulwin X3 debuted in 2025 as a fully electric compact SUV. Production began in China during the second half of 2025 and continues on as of 2026.

The standard Fulwin X3 featured a shorter body than the X3 Plus but shared the same general platform, wheelbase, and design language. Exterior styling included squared-off bodywork, black plastic cladding, roof rails, and distinctive L-shaped lighting elements. The design emphasized a rugged, off-road-inspired appearance even though the vehicle was primarily intended for urban and suburban use.

The X3 measured approximately 170 inches long, making it compact by American SUV standards while still offering a spacious interior thanks to its electric platform. Interior features included a digital instrument panel, a large center touchscreen, Qualcomm-powered infotainment hardware, and multiple advanced driver-assistance systems.

Fulwin X3 Trim Levels

At launch, the Fulwin X3 was reportedly offered in three trim levels in the Chinese market. Chery did not initially use globally familiar trim names such as “LX” or “Premium.” Instead, the trims were generally differentiated by battery size, drivetrain configuration, and technology equipment.

Known Fulwin X3 configurations included:

  • Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive
  • Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive
  • Long Range All-Wheel Drive

The rear-wheel-drive versions used a single electric motor producing approximately 248 horsepower, while higher-spec all-wheel-drive versions added a front motor for additional traction and performance. Battery capacities included approximately 50.8-kWh and 68.4-kWh packs. Official Chinese testing standards quoted driving ranges of about 249 miles to 323 miles depending on specification.

Fulwin X3 Plus: Years Produced

2025–Present: Introduction of the X3 Plus

The Fulwin X3 Plus was introduced alongside the standard X3 in 2025. The Plus version acted as a larger and more premium variant of the standard model. It featured slightly increased exterior dimensions, additional cabin space, and upgraded equipment.

Compared with the standard X3, the X3 Plus adopted a more upscale positioning within the lineup. It retained the same boxy design philosophy but offered more advanced driver-assistance technologies, larger wheels, and additional comfort features.

The X3 Plus also emphasized improved multimedia capability. Higher trims included a 15.6-inch infotainment display with 2.5K resolution and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processing hardware. Advanced safety systems included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking assistance, and highway navigation assist functions.

Fulwin X3 Plus Trim Levels

The Fulwin X3 Plus launched with four known variants.

Documented configurations included:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Range
  • Rear-Wheel Drive Long Range
  • All-Wheel Drive Long Range
  • Premium All-Wheel Drive

The all-wheel-drive X3 Plus used a dual-motor setup producing approximately 347 horsepower combined. This gave the vehicle significantly stronger acceleration and improved traction compared with the single-motor X3 models.

The X3 Plus also included a higher wading depth and more off-road-oriented styling details, reinforcing its adventurous image. Despite this appearance, the vehicle remained fundamentally a compact electric crossover rather than a dedicated off-road SUV.

Technology and Engineering

One of the defining aspects of the Fulwin X3 series is its technology package. Chery equipped the vehicles with modern digital interfaces and advanced electronic systems intended to compete with newer Chinese EV rivals.

Key features across the lineup included:

  • 9.2-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Voice-command functionality
  • Level 2 driver assistance
  • Multiple drive modes
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon infotainment processors

The vehicles also used lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, a technology increasingly favored in China because of its lower cost and improved thermal stability.

Suspension systems consisted of MacPherson struts in front and multi-link rear suspension setups. This configuration was designed to balance ride comfort with everyday handling performance.

Market Position and Competition

The Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus entered one of the most competitive automotive segments in China. Rivals include electric SUVs from BYD, Geely, Leapmotor, and GAC, along with Chery’s own iCar products.

Pricing was one of the lineup’s strongest advantages. Reports from the Chinese launch indicated starting prices equivalent to roughly $12,500 for the standard X3 and around $15,300 for the X3 Plus. These aggressive prices positioned the vehicles as affordable EV alternatives for younger buyers entering the electric market.

The rugged styling also distinguished the X3 series from many rounded, city-focused electric crossovers. Some observers compared the design philosophy to compact off-road-inspired vehicles such as the Ford Bronco Sport or Suzuki Jimny, though the Fulwin models remained uniquely Chinese in execution.

Future Outlook

The future of the Fulwin X3 lineup appears closely tied to Chery’s global EV ambitions. Chery has expanded rapidly into export markets throughout Asia, South America, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. Vehicles sharing the same underlying architecture as the X3 are already marketed under different names in some international markets.

Chery also confirmed plans for additional variants within the X3 family. One upcoming model, known as the Fulwin X3L, was announced as a larger extended-range electric vehicle with a hybrid-assisted drivetrain and greater driving range.

Given the rapid pace of development in China’s EV sector, future updates to the X3 and X3 Plus will likely include improved battery efficiency, expanded autonomous-driving capability, and additional export-market adaptations. Chery’s aggressive pricing strategy could also help the vehicles gain traction outside China if international distribution expands further.

Although still in the early stages of production, the Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus already represent an important milestone for Chery’s modern electric vehicle strategy. The lineup combines affordable pricing, modern digital technology, and rugged SUV styling in a package aimed at mainstream buyers.

From the revival of the Fulwin nameplate to the launch of advanced electric SUVs based on the iCar platform, the X3 family highlights how dramatically Chery has evolved since its early years producing budget sedans. With expanding trim levels, growing international interest, and additional models already planned, the Fulwin X3 and X3 Plus appear positioned to become key players in Chery’s next generation of electrified vehicles.
